Given it's that time of year again, I wanted to share my New Year's Resolutions
for 2019 which I'll
probably break hopefully keep.
What better way to start my resolution than to open up 2019 with a blog post!? 😂
It's been over a year since my last blog post. I promised myself this year I'd be better at maintaining my blog. I have the goal to write at least one blog post a month on various topics, not just exclusive to tech. I'd like to start doing reviews on movies, albums, books, and write posts on topics that interest me.
We'll see how well I keep this up; right now I'm a twelfth done this goal… So far so good. 😅
I'll admit it. I'm not a morning person; I have a serious problem waking up.
This one might be the hardest resolution for me, given my love for the snooze button. 😴
This addiction to snoozing my alarm results in me sleeping in more often than naught, waking up much later than I initially planned. This causes me to feel groggy or fatigued when I eventually roll over, realize how late it is, and finally yeet myself out from my bed.
Yes, I used yeet as a verb — it's 2019.
For me, the most productive hours of my day are in the morning from 7 to 11 AM. I'd like to take advantage of this time to work on my goals and hobbies. I hope to do so by waking up earlier, and maintaining a consistent sleeping schedule.
To help me achieve this goal, I'm going to try out a sleep app called the "Pillow Automatic Sleep Tracker" to track how I'm sleeping, and to take advantage of their "smart alarm" feature which can wake me up at the lightest possible sleep stage within half an hour of my alarm.
As of the end of 2018, I clocked in at a whopping 138.5 lbs (62.82 kg). With a height of 6'2", I'm underweight for both my height and age.
I've always been regarded as a skinny kid growing up. It's become part of my identity being the tall, lanky, awkward guy. I believe part of my weight problem is due to my inconsistent sleeping schedule. Since I usually wake up between 10 to 11 AM, I'll skip breakfast and break my fast with lunch. I'm hoping by fixing my sleeping problem, it will help to fix my weight problem, by eating breakfast regularly in the morning.
I'd like to gain at least 11.5 lbs to finish the year above 150 lbs (68.04 kg). To achieve this goal, I'm going to start tracking how many calories I eat on a daily basis, to ensure I'm meeting the recommended caloric intake for a 6'2", 22 year old male. To track the calories I'm consuming, I'm using an app called cronometer to log my diet and track my nutrition, fitness, and health data.
I also want to start a workout routine, to get in better shape while I gain weight, but we all know how workout resolutions go, so… 😂
I've gotten into the habit of journaling each day with org-journal, an emacs
package which makes it convenient and easy to keep daily, encrypted journal
entries with emacs. I want to continue journaling every day with
to track my daily
TODOs, and notes.
Some things I plan to write down and track include:
Social media is a huge time sink for me. It's very easy to spend an hour of unproductive, meaningless time on facebook or twitter.
I understand the inherent benefits of each platform, but there are plenty of negative aspects too. I'm upset about the amount of time I waste on these websites, and how I feel because of it. This time could be better spent focusing on personal goals or learning new skills.
I plan to limit the time I spend on social media to 20 minutes per day. I'm going to start using a chrome extension called StayFocused, which lets you control how much time you're allowed to spend on blacklisted websites before it blocks you from viewing those sites.
I plan to blacklist Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit to start. I'm going to track the time I spent on other websites and reassess if I need to update the list to include these other time-consuming websites as well.
This past year I read two books which had a profound impact on my life: "How To Win Friends And Influence People" by Dale Carnegie and "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***" by Mark Manson. Both had a profound impact on me, and changed the way I viewed my life.
These books deserve separate blog posts to detail the impact they've had on my life, and the key takeaways from reading them.
Having this profound impact reminded me how powerful reading can be. It reminded me how much I love it, and reminded me that, sadly, I haven't been reading much lately. This year, I'm going to change that.
I'm going to start by reading a piece of fiction by my favorite fantasy author: George R.R. Martin. No, sadly it isn't Winds of Winter. 😭
If you have any recommendations for books to read, I'd love to hear them! Please contact me and let me know your suggestions!
This is one of my more ambitious goals; I'd like to record and release my first EP by the end of 2019. Music has been a passion in my life since I was twelve years old when I first started playing guitar. I've written several songs over the past few years, but I've never had the courage to record them.
I've recorded a few songs on my soundcloud a few years ago, but I was never happy with the production of the tracks or quality of the songs.
I plan to achieve this goal by completing several sub-goals to help make this album come into fruition:
I'm excited to share the songs I've written once they're recorded and given the proper treatment they deserve. I'll keep you posted! 😎
Thank you for taking the time to read my resolutions! 👏 As per my first resolution, I'm going to try to post more often here on my blog — so stay tuned! 😁
Wishing you all the best this new year! I hope this new year brings you joy, happiness, and plenty of excitement! 🍻
